Fong So's Paintings:
SAR 10 Years On

Exhibition: June 27- July 16, 2007
FCC, Hong Kong

On 27 June 2007, I attended the opening ceremony of Fong So's exhibition at the Foreign Correspondents' Club. Fong So has used his brushes and ink to portray Hong Kong over its first decade as the SAR of China and express his thoughts to "celebrate" this 10th Anniversary in a different way. His paintings, an integration of Chinese painting techniques with some expressionism, powerfully depict his own thoughts and conscience as a former journalist and writer and reflect most Hongkongers' aspirations for democracy and a better life in the SAR. That evening I was also excited and nostalgic meeting old friends, some of whom I had not seen for over 30 years!

I know Fong may not be too happy about my use of the word "celebrate." Perhaps we could all celebrate that, 10 years on, Hongkongers can still showcase our quest for democracy through mass rallies and express different opinions in independent press, just like the messages carried in Fong's paintings. Of course we should all celebrate the reunification of Hong Kong with China in 1997 when the colony ("a British-occupied territory")  of Hong Kong was returned to the motherland. Meanwhile China is on the move towards changes, economic, social, political and more...

Let Fong So's paintings give us some hope and promise for a better tomorrow in the Hong Kong SAR and China.
